Spring sedum roof maintenance

A green roof on a garden building

One of the advantages of sedum planting to a green roof is that is needs relatively little maintenance. Many of our Pods feature sedum roof’s which not only look fantastic but are also great for boosting the eco credentials of your Pod even further. One of the advantages of sedum planting to a green roof is that is needs relatively little maintenance.

Spring is the perfect time for a few basic tasks to ensure that the sedum is looking it’s best through the rest of Spring and Summer. Clear away debris lying on and around the sedum including gutters and drainage outlets to ensure that all of the sedum is exposed to daylight. Remove any weeds, moss or grass that have started to grow in amongst the sedum to prevent them taking over. Any larger bare areas of substrate can be re-planted with sedum plants picked from other areas of the roof. Small bare areas will usually re-generate during the Spring.

How Often Should I Do Sedum Roof Maintenance?

The experts say to do sedum roof maintenance twice a year, maybe three times a year if you live in a particularly humid climate, though, that won’t be a problem for our customers in the UK.

To conduct sedum roof maintenance you should do the following:

  • Weed the whole roof. They can cause the ecosystem of your roof to fall out of balance.
  • Check that no sedum is growing in places they shouldn’t be (Drainage pipes, guttering or hanging over the edge).
  • Check for tree seedlings and non sedum or wildflower plants, remove if they’re growing.

We would recommend doing maintenance in mid spring and late autumn. You can find out more about green roof maintenance in autumn here.
