A new home on Hayling Island

a modular holiday home

Architects Practice JPA approached us with a brief to design and build a new home on the site of a demolished pre-fabricated chalet. The new, contemporary building would need to echo the original home’s footprint but also offer improved energy efficiency, improved eco credentials and the space for extended family holiday visits.

Part of a holiday village on the south coast of England, the home’s heart would be a functional family space where intelligent design would maximise internal space and create a building that sits harmoniously within its surroundings, capitalising on the fantastic views.

Being a seaside location meant that durability against salty sea air was a key design consideration alongside producing a home that complemented existing chalet style buildings on site. Pod Space provided different space saving design options for the fitted kitchen and shower room along with ideas for an exterior decking area that would take advantage of the seafront setting.

Using furniture grade plywood to design and build bespoke bunk beds in the bedrooms ensured the new home catered for visiting guests and despite the bedrooms being relatively small, floor to ceiling windows meant the bedrooms would be bathed in a constant stream of natural light. So too, the large open plan kitchen and main living area which overlooks the sea view. With full width bi-fold doors the home connects seamlessly with a large decking area, also part of the new Pod Space home design.

Living area at bespoke Hayling Island Pod

The Pod has become a home from home for our client’s family and friends, providing a special space to spend valuable time together. Their open plan living area is regularly used as a wonderful communal space and our clients are now able to live the dream of an outside/inside lifestyle by simply opening their bi-folds doors and taking advantage of their sea-facing decking space. With an outside store created as part of the build they even have the perfect place to keep seaside equipment.
